Kate - A Summer of Science and Surgery

Hello Scientists!

My name is Kate and I am from Broomfield, Colorado. I’m so excited to be sharing my experience with you this summer!

I was originally inspired to enter this competition by my 7th grade science teacher in 2016. The challenge aligned with what I wanted to do, and gave me a perfect platform to express my ideas and grow as a learner. I ended up being the State Merit Winner for Colorado that year, and I was beyond excited. However, I felt like I could do better.

When I entered again this year, it was just for me, and boy am I glad I decided to. I now get an amazing opportunity to work with a 3M mentor on my project, as well as get to attend a once-in-a-lifetime final event that I will remember forever.

As excited as I am now, the process of creating my video was not an easy one. The thing is, my decision to re-enter the competition was kind of last-minute, and I didn’t have the time to make my video match the standards of perfection that were in my head. The night before the video was due, I was up late editing and trying to make everything perfect. I remember at one point saying, “I can’t go any further right now” and just submitting my entry.

After that tumultuous night of finishing my video, I didn’t think much about the challenge. In fact, just 10 short days after submitting my entry, I fell during my dance class and dislocated my kneecap. What followed was over a month of checkups and knee braces before I had knee surgery. To be honest, I completely forgot about the competition.

Once I had received news that I was a finalist, however, everything came flooding back. And, honestly, I can’t do much right now because I’m still recovering from knee surgery, so sitting at home working on a science project is a perfect way to spend my summer!

This whole competition is an amazing experience. Regardless of winning, I’m just grateful for the opportunity to work with a mentor on my project, and attend the final event in October. I’m also excited to share my progress through this blog. Thank you to Discovery Education and 3M for sponsoring this great event!

Until Next Time,

Kate
