Meet Kathy Dong. Kathy Dong was named the Professional Development Coordinator in 2014 for the Sunnyside Unified School District in Tucson, Arizona. She attended Sunnyside Schools from grades 2-12 and is elated to serve in the community that has opened her up to so many opportunities. In 2003, Kathy became an elementary school teacher at Liberty Elementary School, the same elementary school she attended as a child, where she taught grades 1, 4, and 5. As a third year teacher, she became involved with her professional organization, the Sunnyside Education Association, where she served for many years in a variety of leadership roles including Community Liaison Chair, Negotiations Chair, Vice-President, and President. Through that experience, Kathy was provided opportunities to serve at the state level in the Arizona Education Association on the Instruction and Professional Development Committee as well as participated in a number of trainings as a facilitator.
After leaving the classroom in 2010, Kathy became a District Technology Integration Coach, where she worked with hundreds of teachers K-12 in learning and establishing sound teaching practices using technology in a 1:1 laptop learning environment. Through this, she helped to develop training and coaching sessions for teachers in Sunnyside as well as other school districts across the country in instructional technology integration. She continues her work as a classroom advocate in every aspect of her career whether it be in professional development planning or work on committees such as the District Evaluation Committee. In 2013, Kathy was named a member of the National Education Association Teacher Leadership Initiative, where she helps to further develop opportunities for teachers to lead from the classroom rather than leave it.
