As my scientific journey is coming to an end, the most memorable experience has definitely been working with a 3M® scientist to complete my final prototype.

First, I want to thank my 3M® mentor Dr. Kris Thunhorst for all of her help and the valuable information that she’s provided me with. Without her expertise and input, I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish my prototype.
Of course, I had a few struggles here and there along the way, but talking through my issues and ideas with her has always helped me get through obstacles. For example, for the problem that I’m addressing, I must replicate an environment that is very hard to duplicate, but after proposing my brainstormed ideas to my mentor, she was able to guide me in the direction of what will be possible and what will not. Another problem that I ran into was getting the right supplies to create my test apparatus for my experiment. Fortunately, I found exactly what I needed and am now passed that hump holding me back.

Working with a 3M® scientist has meant so much to me because with Dr. Thunhorst, it just feels like I’m working on a project with a fellow scientist. She gives me time and respect for each of my ideas and treats me and my ideas with the same respect that I have for hers. I have acquired so much information from her, and I can’t wait to see all of my new knowledge go into the final prototype and presentation.
