Amelia Day - Oh My Gosh!

Hi, my name’s Amelia, and I’m one of the 2016 top ten finalists in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge!

What inspired me to enter the contest in the first place was my science teacher, Michele Chamberlain. I had been working on an invention for a few months and it was going really well, so she suggested this contest. I’m really into videography, so she thought it would be the perfect opportunity. When I was scripting and making my video, it was actually really difficult, because my invention had a lot of applications and I had a lot of content that I wanted to talk about, but I could only make a 2 minutes or less video. While I was filming I worked really hard on talking fast, but not too fast that nobody could understand me…and I had to take a lot of takes. In short, it was hard, but I had a lot of fun and it was definitely worth it.

When I was waiting to hear about whether I was a finalist or not, I was pretty nervous and excited. I was rather optimistic about the whole challenge, but I never really thought that I’d make it this far! When I found out, the only thing that I could say was, “Oh my gosh.” Over and over again. When I told my teacher, that’s the only thing she could say too! My friends and family have been so excited for me and they think that this whole thing is amazing. When I finally told them about how I was one of the top ten finalists, they couldn’t stop asking me questions and telling me how proud they were.

If I win, I plan to use the money to help further my invention. I would like to patent my invention in the future and get it implemented in physical and occupational therapy centers. I’m really excited about all of the fun things I’m going to be doing this summer, and can’t wait to meet all of the other finalists in October!
