Hello everyone! It's been a productive week and I wanted to share thoughts on my progress in a video blog. I worked with my mentor and his colleagues at 3M to analyze the project data and consider the commercial, industrial and consumer applications of my invention. I also had a chance to speak to a local radio station and explain my project to the audience. This experience helped me clarify the project definition and get excellent feedback from potential users!

Hi! This time, I have narrowed my three topics (microplastics, ocean acidification, and mercury contamination) down to one (microplastics), and I promised, I didn’t draw it out of a hat! If you solve ocean acidification, you do not solve the problems of mercury, or plastics. If you solve mercury, you do not solve the problems of ocean acidification or plastics. However, if you solve plastics, you also solve the problems of both mercury and ocean acidification.

Last week,  I finalized my topic with my mentor, Dr. Hansen, and since then I have been conducting preliminary experiments to decide how to procure various parts from 3M and local stores for my project. By working with Dr. Hansen, I am learning how to question various fine details of a project experiment. When I asked Dr. Hansen that I needed a plastic sheet to cover something, she said there are nearly hundreds of types plastic sheets available with varying properties, "which one do you need? What are the requirements for the plastic sheets?

Hey all! This is Krish and it's my second blog post! Let me tell you, the journey so far has been extremely fun as I work with my mentor, Dr. Sahni. We've truly been gaining immense progress and I can't wait to see the end result of this project.  For this blog, I decided to do a video. Watch the video below. I look forward to making more blogs and continuing the Young Scientist Challenge voyage!

Hello fellow scientists! So begins our exciting 3M mentorship journey to project finalization. However, the construction of a useful idea, especially one engineered through scientific research, is both a formidable logistic and creative challenge. I often find that exploring a multitude of ideas often results in clear, orderly, and open-ended solution. In the words of distinguished chemist and author Linus Pauling, “The way to get good ideas is to get lots of ideas and throw the bad ones away.”
