Daniel - 3M Mentorship

Hey guys, welcome back to my blog. Today we are going to talk about the best part of the process, the mentorship program, and having a 3M mentor.

Let’s go over some frequently asked questions.

1. What has been the best part of the process so far?

The best part was seeing how far I could expand my project and take it to the next level. My project has had twists and turns through the summer because that’s part of the research process. Sometimes there are things you look into, and you can move forward, but other times you look into an idea and realize it’s not possible. This is part of the learning and research process. It’s exciting to learn through trial and error.

2. What part has been the most challenging?

The most challenging part was working on my prototype. Making something physical from an idea you have is a lot harder than I thought. Sometimes ideas don't work out, and you have to live with the limitations of what is possible, but it is also part of the learning process.

3. What has the summer mentorship with a 3M scientist meant to you?

The summer mentorship with a 3M scientist has meant a lot to me. This summer journey has been very exciting because I learned a lot about how to think, how to research, and ask questions.  My mentor is Mr. Emslander, and it’s been really great to have weekly sessions with him. I know he’s a very busy person.  The fact that he makes time for our sessions is very kind. He is a great teacher because he makes you think and consider your ideas to see what else if possible.

It means a lot that someone like him, with so many years of experience and 36 patents, would take the time to guide me.

4. How has access to a 3M scientist helped you?

Mr. Emslander’s year of experience is an amazing resource to have access to. When I tell him an idea, I can see how he thinks, how he analyzes the idea, and the facts surrounding it. This is an invaluable resource to have access to, especially as a teen. I know for a fact that my research and the progress I made wouldn't have been possible without his guidance.

Ok thanks for visiting my blog.

Next time we will do a recap of my summer journey.

See you then!
