Hello fellow scientists! It’s hard to believe that we are already rounding out week five of the mentorship. For me, it has been packed with revision, discussion, and brainstorming; all of which revolve centrally around research. The idea of research is as ancient as information itself. It is vital to how we learn and develop complex thoughts/abstractions, which are ultimately built on and modified indefinitely. It can be defined as a process of learning from others, as well as the construction of one’s own knowledge base on experience and the solitary exploration of concepts. Research is the defining force behind the lasting progression of ideas and solutions leading into the modern age. If it weren’t for this fundamental process, solving problems would be nearly impossible.

In my opinion, the more prior information one has before approaching a problem or novel concept, the more efficient and productive their effort and thought will be. In the past, accessing information has been the foremost challenge for many. However, with the advent of the Internet and nearly instantaneous information sharing, the primary challenge of research has evolved into organizing and evaluating the plethora of readily available sources. As I continue my research and apply it to conceptualizing a prototype, these ideas will continue to affect my process. Noise cancellation is a highly scientific area of physics, filled with decades of research, trial, error and prior art. I must absorb as much of this information as possible to inform my journey to solve the problem in a unique and effective way. From white papers and existing patents to blogs, product websites and videos, the research quest to observe, deduce, experiment and define real innovation is a true challenge, but one worth pursuing.
