Greetings Fellow Young Scientists, Friends and Followers, We are nearing the home stretch. These past several weeks have been incredibly focused on turning our ideas into prototypes. This would not have been possible without the help of our mentors and their colleagues at 3M, all experts in their fields... and mine! I was fortunate to meet with some incredible scientists who helped me challenge, refine and focus my invention into a valuable solution for use in both industrial and commercial settings.

Hi! I am in the last few stages of my project. To verify all of my detection systems, I have been using a novel method proposed in a Nature article, which has close to 100% accuracy in identifying plastics. This method uses Nile Red dye to color the plastics and proceeds to look at it with multiple fluorescent lights. It stated that the light that worked the best was blue-green light.

Hi again fellow scientists and engineers! I’ve been working hard on my summer project and doing lots of research!  I did get a chance to go on vacation with my family in North Carolina.  We visited Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers flew the first airplane!  Please check out my video blog below where I share my thoughts on the importance of research in a science project.

Hi again! Wow, can you guys believe it? It’s been two months since the summer 3M mentorship first started! Time really does fly; especially when you get to work with professional scientists like my mentor, Dr. Sahni, and other medicinal chemists, drug delivery experts, and chemical printing specialists. This project has come to a place that I could not have nearly imagined if it weren’t for the 3M summer mentorship.

Research and development (R & D) have been a unique experience of this project. I have done numerous research projects as a part of my school coursework. However, working with my mentor, Dr. Ali, who is from the industry, has given me a new perspective to that research. Now I am also thinking about developing the product that could someday be mass produced and used for treating the patients.
