Meet Alec. Alec's invention of a circular ion accelerator aims to make entry into space easier by giving multiple energy charges to passing particles before they are ejected from a rocket into space. Current linear ion accelerators only pass charging capacitor plates once before the are released from the rocket and lost into space, but by creating a circular accelerator, Alec hopes this is no longer the case. Alec hopes to win the Young Scientist Challenge to further his circular accelerator prototype. With the world's population growing at an extreme rate, Alec believes entry into space is more important than ever.
Why did you enter the Young Scientist Challenge?
I thought it was an good opportunity to be able to share my ideas. I also hope to win so I can use all or most of the money to start working on making prototypes of my invention.
What is your favorite invention of the last 100 years, and why?
My favorite invention of the last hundred years is the Internet. My primary reason for this is that I love to teach myself science (especially physics) online. With the invention of the Internet, people of my generation have the ability to access advanced lectures and books which enable them to learn far more than they would be able to without it.
In 15 years I hope to be...
In 15 years I hope to be some type of physicist. My favorite would probably be theoretical physics; however, astrophysics and experimental particle physics certainly are high on my list as well. Additionally, I hope that effects discovered in particle physics and quantum gravity will be able to be utilized to make inventions to help humanity; if this looks to be possible, I really hope to work on it.
